(৪) tell somebody/something (from somebody/something) আলাদা করে চেনা; ফারাক করতে পারা; It is difficult to tell his brother from him: they look so much alike. (৫) বুঝতে পারা: Can you tell which button to press to start the machine? tell the time ঘড়ি দেখে সময় বলা। You never can tell তুমি কখনোই নিশ্চিত হতে পারো না (কারণ বাহ্যিক চেহারা দেখে প্রায়ই ঠকতে হয়)। ‘there is/was no telling জানা বা বোঝা অসম্ভব। (৬) (প্রাচীন) গণনা করা। tell one’s beads তসবি জপা; জপমালা বা তসবিদানা গুনে গুনে দোয়াদরুদ পড়া। tell somebody off (for something/to do something) (ক) একজন একজন করে গুনে প্রত্যেককে নির্দেশ দেওয়া। (খ) (কথ্য) কারো দুষ্কর্মের হিসাব করা; ভর্ৎসনা করা: The teacher told the student off for making so many careless mistakes. (৭) tell (on/upon somebody) স্বাস্থ্যের ক্ষতি করা: Hard work is telling on him. telling (adjective) কার্যকর: He gave a telling speech. tellingly (adverb) = tell.
